stand alone" isn't marked on your SAPI then it needs soft armor behind it, and this includes military platesSpall is when a bullet explodes into tiny fragments when hitting a steel plate at near a perpendicular degree angle.  Ricochet is when pieces, or even the whole bullet deflect off a steel plate when hitting at a sharper angle.  These soft inserts  are designed to go in your  plate pockets IN FRONT of steel SAPI plates to mostly eliminate spall and reduce ricochets .  They stop the bullet fragments exploding off  after hitting the steel to keep them from hitting you or your nearby buddy.  Front plates are particularly dangerous because of being close to your carotid  artery.  All steel plates are prone to this problem, and rubber coatings (linex, rhinolining etc) do not do much after the 1st shot. And edge protection only stops spall from shots right at the edge, and can't stop richocets or high angle spall.
